Our Sportfishing Charter Boats
Our boats are fast, dry, comfortable Robalo center
consoles using dependable outboard power. All are equipped with
color video sounders, VHF radios, GPS satellite navigators, outriggers,
live bait well and auxiliary power. Seas in our area are very
calm, and these versatile craft handle well both inshore and offshore.
We keep a spare outboard (new) in house for a quick changeout
should a problem arise.
Sportfishing Equipment
All of out tackle and gear is world class. Offshore
tackle includes custom built and SEEKER standup rods with well
maintained, dependable PENN, SHIMANO and FIN-NOR reels. We have
an impressive inventory of heavy and light tackle for all applications,
offshore and inshore. We make our own, very successful offshore
trolling lures and stock a large arsenal of leading brands. If
you have a favorite outfit, or some lures that have worked elsewhere
for you, bring them along!
Costa Rica Fishing Styles and Techniques
We stress angler participation at Golfito Sportfishing.
You are part of the crew, part of the team. Comments from past
guests have told us that the most rewarding aspect of big game
fishing to the angler is knowing that he or she hooked up, fought
and released their own fish. We'll be there to coach and assist
you every step of the way. Its your fishing vacation, and you
can also participate in how you want to fish. We'll mix up your
trip by using different angling methods to introduce you to new
and exciting fishing techniques.
Costa Rica Fishing Seasons
Our peak season runs from December to the END
of May. The period combines the most pleasant weather, calmest
sea conditions with good number of all species, especially Pacific
Sailfish. However, we have excellent fishing all months of the
year. July and August are the best months to chase that marlin
of a lifetime here. Blacks up to 1,000 pounds and some huge blue
marlin are feeding in our waters during this period of "Little
Summer:
Yellowfin tuna up to, and exceeding 300 pounds are
also chasing squid close to our coast from August to late November.
Remember, the best time to come fishing with us
is whenever you can get away!! Do as some of our many repeat customers
do -- Make two trips!! One strictly for the inshore fishing and
one for offshore. Or make one trip to Costa Rica in February for
billfish and another to Panama for wahoo
season from August to November.
The Responsible Sportsman
Make no mistake, we love the taste of fresh fish,
but so many anglers pass through our area and all of Costa Rica,
that if all wanted to take home a cooler full of fillets, soon
there would be no reason or desire to come back. That is why we
ask our guest to enjoy their seafood meals while with us, but
release most after a quick photo op.
We do all we can to insure a released fish is in
good condition. Our use of circle hooks in our "bait to switch"
fishing has not only virtually insured a mouth hooked fish, but
has also raised our hookup released / ratios substantially. We
do not utilize long, gut hooking drop-backs.
Some fish just jump themselves to death. This is
a fact of life especially where marlin are concerned. That is
why we try to match the tackle to the target species. Shorter
fights lead to healthier fish being released. If a billfish cannot
be revived, we make use of the entire fish, with most donated
to poorer families and elderly folks in our little village.
Enjoy your fishing experiences, sharpen your angling
skills and knowledge, but remember the key word here is "Sportfishing."
